Telephone Boxes - S/T LP
In the early 1980s, in the British independent music scene, The Telephone Boxes were the next big thing that that never quite happened. Repeatedly touted by those in the know, they were a 2 guitar, bass and drums band, playing highly addictive and inventive pop songs with a combustible energy and enthusiasm. Highlights of their brief, but brilliant, career included supporting The Smiths on their first UK tour (1983/84) – the Boxes went down a storm… every night. Between 1983 and 1985, when they split-up, they headlined around the country and supported various bands including; Orange Juice, The Daintees, Billy Bragg, Hurrah!, Felt, Gary Glitter(!) and many others. In 1984 they played at the ICA’s Big Brother Is Watching You festival alongside Prefab Sprout, The Redskins, Bronski Beat, the Red Guitars and others. The influential fanzine The Underground described them as “the best ‘Pop’ band of the eighties”.
After they split, Peter - the singer and guitarist, went on to form the Wallflowers who achieved success with a number of great singles and Radio One sessions. Blushing Girl Nervous Smile reached number 13 in the vinyl singles chart when it was re-released in 2019.
The Telephone Boxes have never released any recordings… until NOW!
The album includes the raw recordings of 1982, live tracks from the Smiths tour and their later, more polished, studio sessions.
